Where and when can you get on the historic buses of Barcelona?

The Barcelona bus network celebrates its centenary in 2022 and TMB has decided to bring some of the most emblematic historical vehicles closer to the public. Among them are the British double-decker bus that circulated around the city between 1949 and 1965 or the model that arrived in Spain in 1936 and was used to transport soldiers during the Civil War.

The tour organized by the TMB Foundation is open to all citizens, so that whoever wants to can get on and discover the four classic buses that will tour the municipalities of the metropolitan area this year. The initiative has already passed through Cornellà, Sant Just Desvern and El Prat de Llobregat. Over the next few months, it will also pass through other towns and neighborhoods in Barcelona (at the end of this article we attach the planned calendar). Four historic buses

The oldest bus that participates in the tour is the Dodge Brothers 240, a vehicle built as a truck in the United States and that, as we have indicated before, served to carry soldiers during the Spanish Civil War. After the war it was adapted in Catalonia for passenger transport, and was used in the Cal Font de Igualada textile factory until 1980.

In the 1990s it was restored and participated in filming such as the one for the movie Soldiers of Salamis. In 2008 it was repainted with the corporate colors of TMB and the initials of the Compañía General de Autobuses (CGA).

In 1955, the Chausson Urbas bus came into operation, which covered metropolitan lines until 1976. Only one copy remains – number 59 – of the 25 imported from France. They were bicolor: dark green at the bottom and cream at the top. In 2009 its restoration was completed and an engine was mounted so that it can circulate.

Surely, the most unique bus in the collection is the ACLO Regente III, a British double-decker model that circulated in Barcelona between 1949 and 1965. It is a vehicle identical to the characteristic red London buses. In Barcelona, the bodywork was originally red and cream, but in the 1960s it was painted blue.

The ACLO Regente III was restored in 1978 and presented at the Expomòbil hall. It then circulated for a decade on the Zoo’s tourist line, the so-called Zoobus. Finally, the 1989 was definitively withdrawn from service and has recently been restored.

And lastly, the fourth vehicle that is taking part in the TMB Foundation tour is the Pegaso 3036, the first articulated bus that circulated in Barcelona at the end of the 1960s. Initially, it had a length of 18 meters and four doors on the right side, but it had to be shortened because it was longer than the law allowed. That is why it remained at 16.5 meters and three doors, some modifications that would mark the acquisition of future articulated bus models.

In the 1970s, many vehicles of this series were rebuilt and a roof hatch was added for air renewal. Bus 3036 was withdrawn in 1987 and transferred to the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona to provide service within the campus, where it circulated with license plate number 17 until 2003.
