Samsung Electronics Unveils Next-Generation Communications Technology at Samsung 6G Forum – Samsung Newsroom Malaysia

The Samsung 6G Forum is an opportunity to find out what’s coming. Experts from academia and industry specialized in communications technology project what is already underway and what hyperconnectivity will be, with Deep Learning and the intelligent network for 6G, among other resources

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced that the company is hosting its first Samsung 6G Forum (S6GF) online.

Under the theme “The next hyperconnected experience for everyone”, the forum is divided into two sessions and broadcast live online via Samsung’s YouTube channel. Each session consists of talks from experts from academia and industry specializing in next-generation communications technologies, followed by a panel discussion.

“We see that 6G will provide the best experiences for humans and everything through the next level of hyper-connectivity, and this insight serves as the foundation of our 6G vision,” said Sebastian Seung, President and Head of Samsung Research.[1]. “We think the time is right to start preparing for 6G. Shaping 6G will take many years, as we have seen with previous generations, and will require a lot of discussion and collaboration between industry players and academia.”

Morning session: 6G air interface

The morning session is held under the theme “6G Air Interface”. In this session, Jeffrey Andrews, Professor at the University of Texas at Austin, delivers a keynote speech titled ‘Deep Learning in the 6G Air Interface’, highlighting that deep learning (DL) will be a key technology that will enable the 6G network, which can provide important advances in many layers of the air interface.

Following the keynote address, Charlie Zhang, Senior Vice President (SVP) of Samsung Research America, Takehiro Nakamura, Senior Vice President and General Manager of NTT DOCOMO, and John Smee, Senior Vice President of Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. deliver detailed expert talks.

Samsung Research America Senior Vice President Charlie Zhang makes a presentation on the ‘Evolution of Radio Technology for Beyond 5G and 6G’. It presents that while 6G technologies are still in their infancy, some emerging directions are taking shape and gaining momentum in both academia and industry, including support for new spectrum such as upper mid-band in the 7 range. -24GHz and the Terahertz (THz) band, novel antenna technologies, the evolution of duplex technology and network topology, spectrum sharing, Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a native part of protocol design, etc. .

NTT DOCOMO Senior Vice President Takehiro Nakamura discusses ‘5G and 6G Evolution’ and highlights research focused on technologies and services for the evolution of 5G, and that 6G is accelerating around the world. Qualcomm Technologies Inc. Senior Vice President John Smee discusses ‘Driving Air Interface Innovation Towards 6G’, emphasizing advanced wireless research and development across multiple vectors that will bring disruptive innovations and push the boundaries of technology to enable new and enhanced user experiences with 6G.

Following the presentations, Juho Lee, a member of Samsung Research, leads a panel discussion on 6G RAN technology. Next, Sunghyun Choi, Executive Vice President (EVP) and Head of Advanced Communications Research Center at Samsung Research, shares Samsung’s progress in 6G research along with demonstration videos.

Afternoon Session: Smart Grid for 6G

The afternoon session takes place under the theme ‘Intelligent Network for 6G’. Tarik Taleb, Professor at the University of Oulu, Finland, begins with a keynote speech on ‘6G Networks – the path towards a novel vision of “Service of Services”’. Highlights that AI, network functions virtualization, software-defined networking, and edge/cloud computing have delivered significant benefits in terms of reduced operating costs and expenses, flexibility in deployment, and faster time to market, and mentions that 6G will likely enable a new breeze of cloud-native mobile networks.

After the keynote speech, Seungjoo Maeng, Master of Samsung Electronics, Byonghyo Shim, Professor of Seoul National University, and Shi Jin, Professor of Southeast China University, deliver in-depth expert talks.

Samsung Eectronics teacher Seungjoo Maeng talks about ‘Challenges in applying AI/ML technology to improve the performance of mobile communication systems’, highlighting the challenges in applying AI and ML (Machine Learning) to perfect the performance of wireless mobile communication systems and how to solve them.

Professor Byonghyo Shim from Seoul National University gives a talk on ‘Deep learning-assisted mobile sensing and beamforming for mmWave and THz communications’, introducing the new paradigm to control DL-based mmWave and THz communications. Southeast China University Professor Shi Jin introduces ‘Deep Learning-Based CSI Feedback in Massive MIMO Systems’, discussing the challenges and potential research directions associated with implementing CSI (Channel State Information) feedback based on DL in future wireless communication systems.

Following these presentations, Samsung Research Executive Vice President Sunghyun Choi leads a panel discussion on networked AI.
