Minecraft It is one of the most popular video games in history. One of the reasons for its success is that it provides a wide variety of tools that allow users to unleash their creativity to create a lot of impressive structures and scenarios. Now, a group of fans has drawn the attention of the community for their ambitious project: to recreate the city of New York.

According to information from The New York Times (via The player), about 2731 people currently work in a 1 to 1 recreation of the mythical American city in Minecraft; each block in the video game is equivalent to a cubic meter in real life. All this as part of the Build the Earth project, which seeks to recreate the entire planet.

This is what New York City looks like in Minecraft

The user Minefact, a 21-year-old German programmer, is the one leading this ambitious project and recently announced that his team made up of people from all over the world has been working on the recreation of The Big Apple for more than 2 years. To fulfill his mission, he uses a technology based on Google Maps that he himself developed and that allows identifying and tracing the environments of the buildings to transfer them to the video game.

Although the images look incredible, there is still a lot of work to be done. As explained by the medium The New York Timesthe American city has more than a million buildings.

“We circle around different districts. We worked a week in Chinatown, then a week in Tribeca, a week in the Bowery, and then we went back to Chinatown. We always work on multiple districts at the same time to keep things interesting,” said Minefact.

Due to the very ambitious aspirations of the project, some restrictions were drawn. Specifically, players will only recreate the exteriors of buildings in the city. However, certain public spaces and iconic locations such as Grand Central Terminal will be transferred to the video game.

An interesting and fun fact is that Minefact and other team members have never seen New York City in real life. However, they want to be able to visit them before the project comes to an end.
