How Liverpool and Southampton created a rivalry highlighted by a public apology for 'harassing' Van Dijk

In recent transfer windows, the Reds have signed several players from St. Mary’s Stadium

Southampton and Liverpool meet this Tuesday for the penultimate day of the Premier League. In addition to the fact that the result is worth a lot in the race for the title, the duel is not without reference to a rivalry recently created by the two teams thanks to the transfer market.

Since the early 2000s, the two teams have been involved in some negotiations, such as the sale of Peter Crouch to the Reds in 2005 and the transfer of Guthrie to the Saints two years later.

However, Liverpool began to look even more towards the Southampton team in the last decade in search of players. The window with the most negotiations was in 2014, when Lallana, Lovren Y lambert joined the men of Brendan Rodgers. The next year, Nathaniel Clyne He joined his former teammates.

Even two of the biggest stars of the era Jurgen Klopp they came from St. Mary’s Stadium as the most expensive transfers in the club’s history to date. In July 2016, the Reds signed Sadio Mane for 41.2 million euros.

In January 2018, Virgil Van Dijk became the most expensive defender in history in a transfer fee of €84.65 million. The deal, however, took months to finalize before it became official.

In June 2017, the Liverpool published an official note in which he apologized to the Southampton for “any misunderstanding” related to a negotiation for Van Dijk.

“We apologize to the owners, managers and fans of the Southampton for any misunderstanding involving Virgil van Dijk. We respect the position of Southampton and we can confirm that we are no longer interested in the player.”

After what happened, the Reds even reached an agreement with their rivals to transfer the forward danny ings (loaned in 2018 and sold permanently in 2019) and the attacking midfielder takumi minamino (loaned in 2021).
