Guadalajara will host a WTA 1000 in October

MEXICO CITY (AP) — For the first time in history, the Mexican city of Guadalajara will host a WTA 1000 tennis tournament, organizers announced Monday.

The tournament will be held from October 17 to 23 at the Pan American Tennis Center, which in November last year hosted the WTA Finals.

“It is something incredible to be able to present a tournament as big as a WTA 1000, one of the highest categories; It is a triumph not only for Guadalajara but for Mexico and all of Latin America,” tournament director Gustavo Santoscoy told The Associated Press.

“We have been in the tennis organization for many years with good relations, what we have achieved, with the Zapopan Open, from last year’s finals that testify that we are prepared to reach 1000”, he added.

Guadalajara joins cities like Dubai, Toronto, Rome and Cincinnati that also host women’s tournaments at this level, second only to the four Grand Slams.

Mexican organizers have taken advantage of the fact that the WTA decided not to organize tournaments in China following complaints by player Peng Shuai, who disappeared from public view after accusing a former member of the ruling Communist Party of sexual abuse.

The WTA was contesting two 1000 tournaments in China, one in Wuhan and the other in Beijing.

Santoscoy said that for the same reason the future of the tournament in Mexico will be decided later and for now they are only guaranteed to do it in 2022.

“We have conversations year after year, with the pandemic, the war and other issues, today they offer it to us and we take it, let’s see what happens. We have been taking advantage of opportunities, first they gave us a 125, then a 250, then the Finals and now this, we accept it and a decision will be made later,” he added.

Guadalajara hosted the WTA Finals in November last year after Shenzen, also in China, was unable to do so due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Spanish-Venezuelan Garbiñe Muguruza was proclaimed champion.

The tournament will be held in Zapopan, a suburb of Guadalajara, a city located in the west of the country and about 600 kilometers from the capital.

The director said that to host the tournament they plan to expand the current infrastructure to have four stages where the matches are held, in addition to expanding other areas such as food and amenities.

Zapopan has already received this year a category 250 tournament of the tour, which took place between February 21 and 27.
