From hard content to training fun

In the last three decades, society has faced multiple, complex and rapid changes. Variations that have also caused educational models to change and in this the arrival of New laws that have made teaching move towards a more diverse model, away from content and adapted to all students, also involving families in the process.

«The teaching worksl is unrecognizable with the one from 35 years ago. At that time, there was a lot of emphasis on the knowledge that students had to have, the operation of the centers was different, the layout of the subjects… », reports Antonio Erencia, director of the IES Ategua Castro del Rio. The dynamic was different, since until 1990 in the institute education was not compulsory.

With the arrival of the new law that introduced Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) and that «ends with the postulates of the law of 70 and introduces us to a teaching that emphasizes a series of values and cross-cutting themes that, until then, were they played quite a lot in profile, ”says Erencia. This stage abounds in the diversity of education, extending compulsory education up to 16 years of age. After the Logse, the educational system has undergone several regulatory changes that abound in aspects such as the exceptionality of repeating a year.

“Teachers now have a better handle on emotions and pedagogy”

In addition, 35 years ago the first school councils began to be forged, “which suppose the opening of the center to the family and to society with all that that implies in terms of organization”, asserts the also president of the Association of Directors of Higher Education Institutions in Andalusia (Adián) in Córdoba, who assures that with the passage of time in the final evaluation of the students the content has been losing weight, leaving space for other issues related to values. “Over the years we have advanced, and I think for the better, it is in the attempt to create a teaching that leaves no student behind, that is committed to attention to diversity,” says the teacher. This change has sparked debate about the level of demand, «I don’t think it has gone down, the students now face other demands, other goals and other needs. Now there are many routes and many paths, more appropriate to what will later be found in the real world, “says the director.

These changes in teaching models are also reflected in the figure of the teacher who changes his profile according to the generation. «We belong to totally different societies, the country of 30 years ago is not the country of today. Teachers are part of society and the teacher who arrives now arrives better trained than us because we were very well trained from the point of view of our university studies but we had enormous deficiencies in terms of pedagogical knowledge, conflict resolution treatments”, Erence says. «Teachers have acquired new skills such as language and technology and have diversified their tools. He has the challenge of emotional and personal accompaniment of the students with improvements in motivation and empathy, according to the new students. The educational community has gone from not existing, to being a protagonist and having its own entity, with the challenge that any member of it can participate and enrich the teaching process”, highlights the president of the Association of Infant and Primary Directors (Asadipre), Isabel Bernal.

Now, children enter the educational system earlier and professionals must adapt to all ages and needs. A fundamental aspect is the deployment of technological means that «have modified the resources and methodologies of teaching. The challenges will be a greater investment in the media, finding the combination between books and technology and an adequate transmission of the ethical values with which we have to use social networks”, says Bernal, who highlights that “language teaching, especially that of the English language, has been one of the great contents expanded during the last decades.
