We are privileged to have a paradise so close. An almost wild place in which to get lost, which maintains the essence of a desert island in which to disconnect in order to reconnect with ourselves. Formentera is that Eden of only 20 kilometers that hides the treasure of tranquility.

Thanks to the efforts made during the last decades, sustainability remains the cornerstone of this small island. Accessible only by boat -which has allowed it to stay away from the tourist crowds-, although in summer it is a most prized destination for its crystal clear waters and golden sand beaches, but what many are unaware of is that the rest of the year It is also a unique destination with much to see, and with an agenda full of interesting activities to do.

To begin with, it has 132 kilometers of signposted green routes away from the main road to explore on foot or by bicycle, and which allow you to discover the island from multiple points of view. There are 32 routes that pass through: districts, beaches, viewpoints, caves, dunes, pine forests… magical places.

Among its most valued assets is the natural treasure of posidonia oceanica. A plant that extends along the seabed and whose function is to purify the waters, which is why the waters of Formentera are so crystal clear and clean. There are 67,000 square hectares of posidonia that produce the oxygen that gives life to fish, sponges, algae and other animals. Its role is vital throughout the world and so important that it was declared a World Heritage Site.

Formentera has been inexorably linked to the sea, it does not have an airport and access is by boat. Your guide, three lighthouses: La Savina, inaugurated in 1926, is the smallest of the three, but it is the first to be seen upon arrival and the one that sees us leave; that of La Mola, from 1861, is located on a cliff 120 meters above sea level, it is 22 meters high and its light can be seen at 23 nautical miles (about 42km); and that of Cap de Barbaria, the best known, from 1971, is located on a straight cliff 100 meters above the sea which is accessed by a rocky path without vegetation.

Old constructions are still preserved from its history. One of the most important archaeological sites in the Balearic Islands is located precisely here. It is the megalithic tomb of Ca na Costa, located between Estany Pudent and the town of Es Pujols. A 4,000-year-old burial site that housed the bodies of eight individuals: six men and two women. It is a large stone dolmen with a circular floor plan.

Other buildings that we find in the landscape of Formentera are the mills. They consist of a cylindrical tower and a roof with six blades, movable to orient them in the direction of the wind. The Molí Vell and the Molí d’en Botigues, located in La Mola; the Molí d’en Teuet and the Molí de ses Roques, near Sant Ferran; the Molí d’en Mateu and the Molí d’en Jeroni, to the west of the church of Sant Francesc, and the now defunct Molí d’en Simon, in Es Cap de Barbaria. Although the best preserved is the Vell with a restored interior.

Gastronomy is another of the strong points of the island with its native products: honey, fresh cheese, figs, dried fish and products from the garden with which delicious dishes are created, such as the peasant salad, the polp fritthe sofrit pagessquid to the gross or the bullit de fish . To taste them at a good price, gastronomic weekends are held at the end of September and beginning of October, offering menus with traditional dishes at a fixed price of 25 euros.

And although it may seem strange, the island is also a wine producer, in fact, the phylloxera plague, which destroyed European vineyards during the second half of the 19th century, did not affect Formentera’s vineyards, precisely because of the isolation it has suffered. We can visit two wineries: Terramoll, on the plateau of La Mola, and Es Cap de Barbaria, about six kilometers from Sant Francesc. A good way to taste Formentera.

The road, which crosses the island from end to end, passes through the main towns where some 12,000 residents live: Sant Francesc Javier, Sant Ferran de Ses Roques, Caló de Sant Agustí and Pilar de La Mola. Small towns of low houses or buildings of no more than three floors, whitewashed, with night markets, restaurants and basic shops, but perfect for living without stress.

And why not? there is also music, from June 2 to 5, the Formentera Jazz Festival takes place. For four days the music will sound in different parts of the island. A good opportunity to enjoy jazz and a wonderful island. In addition, parallel activities are included to keep you busy all day.
