“Encintados”: the challenge of embodying a lesbian love in Peruvian cinema [y enfrentar la crítica] | Magdyel Ugaz | Ximena Palomino | Peru | lgbtiq | LIGHTS

The first trailer of the Peruvian film was barely released “Curbs”A few weeks ago, it provoked criticism from very different sides: on the one hand, homophobic comments against the story of a couple of women who want to have a child; on the other, raised eyebrows from those who thought they saw the frivolization or ridicule of a sensitive issue such as that of homoparental families.

“The homophobic messages that I have received on my Facebook I could not even mention to you because they have been very aggressive –says Magdyel Ugaz, one of the protagonists of “Encintados”–. They have come to tell me that my career ends hereThey don’t understand how I could have let them down… Things I couldn’t believe I was reading in the middle of 2022″.

Ximena Palomino, the other protagonist, who plays the partner of Magdyel Ugaz’s character, acknowledges for her part that there was a communication problem at the time the film was broadcast: “In some media, the synopsis was oriented towards a side that did not did the movie justice. Seeing the reactions we realized that we had made a communication errorbut we learned from the mistake.”

The comedy directed by Gianfranco Quattrini (“Chicha tu madre”, “Planta madre”) is the first feature film made in Peru that has a lesbian couple as the central protagonists. It tells the love story between Sofía (Ugaz) and Martina (Palomino), who they want to become mothers and devise a reckless plan: that Martina gets pregnant by a man practically in secret. The problem is that, unexpectedly, the father (played by the Argentine Benjamín Amadeo) appears to claim his son and unleashes a family entanglement.

PLEASANT CHALLENGE

“Encintados” has, at the very least, the audacity to address a topic that It is still taboo in a society as conservative as Peru’s. If he manages to round off a refined portrait –and with sufficient cinematographic merits–, it is something that goes through another critical discussion and the spectators will draw their conclusions. For now, it is convenient to reflect on the nature of the prejudices that generated such rejection among the public without even having seen it.

“Suddenly when you hear that it’s a comedy it can surprise you –says Magdyel Ugaz–. In fact, when the film was originally proposed to me, the first thing I thought was that it was a drama. But that it is a comedy does not mean that we make fun of the subject”.

For Ximena Palomino, remembered for her role in the telenovela “En la piel de Alicia”, assuming her first leading role in the cinema with a theme like this was a challenge. “I demanded a lot of myself in searching on topics such as motherhood, the LGBT communityfamily relationships. Because we are talking about important social issues. I know it may spark controversy, but I have prepared myself to rise to the occasion,” she says.

LOVE IS LOVE

How will the Peruvian public take a love story between women, taking into account that there is so little representation of it in the cinema and on TV? “I feel that we are in a time of change not only in Peru, but in the world,” says Magdyel Ugaz. I think it is necessary to know other love stories, not just the ones we learned as children, between men and women. Because there are also stories between man and man, woman and woman, and all the different forms of love”.

A learning process that seems slow and difficult, but that has to start happening. “It was hard for us too,” adds Ugaz. The stories of homoparental families entail a lot of suffering and they have to be made visible. There are rights that are not being recognized, even though they deserve them.”

“That’s why we talk a lot about everything,” adds Palomino. We had a lot, a lot of rehearsal before recording. In the same production there was part of the team that was from the LGBT community. We consulted everything that would help us to be closer to their experiences and from the beginning we were clear that we did not want to stereotype”.

LEARN AND TEACH

Although it is a serious problem, Quattrini’s decision to capture it through humor was well understood by the actresses. “A romantic comedy that, from a lighter tone, can encourage people to talk, to dialogue about the subject,” says Palomino. with Gianfranco [Quattrini] We commented that if there is a good way to talk about uncomfortable truths, that is comedy. I have been doing it for many years and It is a very friendly channel to get closer to people in a country like ours.”, adds Ugaz.

The most complicated parts of “Encintados”? There were several, according to Ximena Palomino, although she highlights some very physical scenes that he must have recorded with Magdyel or Benjamín Amadeo. “But in all our comfort always prevailed. I was always able to talk about it a lot with Gianfranco, consult anything with him”, highlights the actress.

“I think it is necessary to know other love stories, not only the ones we learned as children, between men and women”

Magdyel Ugaz, protagonist of “Encintados”

Magdyel Ugaz, for her part, acknowledges that the entire film was in general an apprenticeship, even on the part of her own character, Sofía: “When I played that Sofía, she told me ‘this woman is really in love, given over to a feeling’. But I don’t remember the last time I was in love! (laughs)”.

And he adds: “What I did feel is that she is very true to herself, she does not care what they say and lives her sexuality. And over time I’m getting closer to that place where I say what I want and respect myself. Because many times I put myself aside to please the rest. And you are disappointed when you are not faithful to your essence. In that sense, Sofía would become like a teacher for me.”
