Commotion in Nantes over Nice fan chants about Sala

PARIS (AP) — Nantes expressed outrage over derogatory chants by Nice fans towards Emiliano Sala during a French league match on Wednesday.

Sala died when the Piper Malibu plane in which he was traveling crashed into the English Channel on January 21, 2019. The Argentine striker was going to leave Nantes, where he was very popular with the fans, to sign for Cardiff of the English Premier League.

“Nantes learned with horror of the chants made by certain Nice fans and cannot but strongly condemn a behavior that degrades the memory of Emiliano Sala,” the club said in a statement on Thursday.

The team retired the number 9 number in tribute to Sala, who scored 48 goals in 133 appearances in his shirt.

Antoine Kombouare, manager of Nantes, censured the Nice fans who made derisive chants about him.

“Human stupidity has no limit. I am outraged, these people have no place in a stadium, ”he said after his team, which was crowned champion of the Coupe de France over the weekend, beat Rennes 2-1 on their ground. “They should be banned, it’s a shame. I feel sorry for his family.”

The club thanked Nice manager Christophe Galtier, who was angry at the chants during the home game against Saint-Etienne.

“I have no adjectives to describe what I have heard,” Galtier said, apologizing on behalf of his team. “We want to offer our apologies to Emiliano Sala’s family and Nantes.”

Fans from the so-called Kop stand who uttered such chants are not welcome on the pitch, he added.

“We shouldn’t listen to those things in a stadium. If they come to insult the dead, let them stay at home,” said the technician. “People sometimes say that what you see inside a stadium is a reflection of society. If this is our society, then it is really (…) ”, he pointed out using a profanity word.

The incident came a few days after Nice’s 1-0 loss to Nantes in the French Cup final at the Stade de France on Saturday.
