Alpine has not betrayed Fernando Alonso this time. The two-time world champion has finally been able to demonstrate his speed with an A522 that has not given him any problems in qualifying, something that has happened to his teammate Esteban Ocon.

A promising fifth

Neither the variable conditions nor the countless interruptions have stopped Alonso from achieving the fifth fastest time in Friday’s qualifying session at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari. Fernando, who rides the new Alpine upgrades, unlike Ocon, has been comfortable with the balance of the car and has shown speed in every possible scenario.

Will the fourth time lucky? We don’t know, but it is time for luck to be in favor of the Asturian driver, who has suffered several injustices related to reliability in the early stages of the 2022 Formula 1 season.

The 40-year-old driver finished satisfied with his performance in the first round of the weekend in Italy: “Feels good to be in the Top 5 again after such a confusing and messy qualifying with changing weather conditions and red flags. Anything can happen with the wet weather and changeable track, so overall I’m happy to start in the top five tomorrow.”, he celebrated.

The reward could have been much greater, as Alonso qualified just 71 thousandths off the third fastest time set by Lando Norris’ McLaren. Despite this, the Alpine setup appears to be just right at Imola and an exciting first sprint race of the season lies ahead.

The man from Oviedo confirmed his good feelings with the French single-seater during the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix: “I noticed the fast car in the last two races and I feel quite comfortable here.. We’ll see how we do today as there are plenty of points on offer in both the sprint and the race on Sunday”, he concluded.

Fernando is 14th in the general classification with only two points. Although, if he kept 5th place in Saturday’s sprint, he would add 4 more. On the other hand, his teammate Esteban started from a distant 19th position due to a supposed failure in the gearbox. Alpine convinces, but still hasn’t solved all its problems.
